Senior Platform Specialist (Networking Engineering)
Permanent, Full-time
Whitireia and WelTec are looking for a Network Engineer who is ready to take the next step in their career. Reporting to the Digital Technology Manager, this role is a "Network-first" position within our Platform/Infrastructure team.
We’re being upfront: we have some significant technical debt. We’re currently navigating a complex legacy network structure and moving to an Extreme Fabric network that needs a steady hand to consolidate and standardise. If you’re an engineer who enjoys the challenge of untangling an environment and moving it toward a "Gold Standard", you’ll fit in well here.
About The Role
Your immediate focus will be two-fold:
- Campus Deployment: You will be a key part of the team managing the network rollout for our Petone campus. While we are operating under a "lift and shift" timeline, you will have a seat at the table to ensure our future roadmap is built into the foundation.
- Network Consolidation: You’ll be the "go-to" person for whiteboarding and implementing a cleaner, more efficient routing setup across our sites.
- This is an intermediate-to-senior "stepping stone" role. While the first 24 months are heavily weighted toward networking (LAN, WAN, Wi-Fi, and Firewalling), our long-term goal is to evolve this into a role across our broader platform stack, including Azure, M365, and Identity.
What we’re looking for
- Technical Logic over Badges: We are an Extreme Networks shop. If you’ve spent your time in Cisco or Juniper environments but understand the underlying logic of enterprise networking, we want to talk to you. Training is available for the right candidate.
- Problem Solvers: You should be comfortable in a "back-room" technical capacity—analysing performance, troubleshooting complex outages, and proactively identifying where we can simplify.
- The "Step-Up" Mindset: This role is ideal for an engineer who has the technical chops but is looking for more ownership. You won’t be the sole person responsible for the network, but you will be expected to provide heavy input on the direction we take.
Skills & Experience
- Strong experience in enterprise or large-scale networking (5,000+ users).
- A solid grasp of network security principles and hybrid cloud connectivity
- Comfortable whiteboarding solutions and explaining the "why" behind a technical path.
- Any experience with Windows Server, PowerShell, or Azure is a bonus, but for now, your networking brain is what we need most.
